The 5 Questions Every Solar Buyer Asks
Can I order solar panels in non-standard / custom sizes from China?
Yes. Chinese manufacturers can produce panels in virtually any dimension. For custom dimensions (exact mm specification), minimum order quantities typically start at 20–50 pieces. Standard sizes with custom wattage configurations can be as low as 10 pieces. Provide your exact mm dimensions, target wattage, and required certifications and we will find the right factory.
Why are solar panel quotes from China so different — $0.18/W vs $0.32/W for the same spec?
The gap reflects real differences in material quality and what is included. Budget quotes ($0.10–0.15/W) typically use B-grade or C-grade cells with lower bin efficiency, cheaper EVA encapsulant, single-layer PET backsheet, and exclude certification costs. Mid-range quotes ($0.16–0.22/W) use A-grade cells, quality backsheet, and include IEC certification. High quotes ($0.25+/W) usually involve Tier-1 branded panels with independent PVEL reliability test data. The cheapest quote for a 500-piece order can easily cost $15,000–30,000 more in degradation losses over 5 years.
Which certifications do I need to import solar panels into my country?
By country: USA — UL 61730 (or legacy UL 1703) + CEC listing for incentive programs. EU — CE marking + IEC 61215 + IEC 61730. UK — MCS certification + UKCA mark. Australia — IEC 61215 + IEC 61730 + SAA (AS/NZS 5033). India — BIS certification (mandatory since 2022). Brazil — INMETRO. South Africa — SABS. Japan — J-PEC registration. Always request the original certificate with the lab's verification number — counterfeit certificates are common.
How do I protect my deposit when sourcing solar panels from China?
Four layers of protection: (1) Use Alibaba Trade Assurance for orders under $150,000 — disputes are adjudicated by Alibaba. (2) For larger orders, use an LC (Letter of Credit) — payment only releases when shipping documents are presented to your bank. (3) Commission a pre-shipment inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas or TÜV ($300–500) before the balance payment — they test actual output against rated specs. (4) Verify the supplier's business license on China's National Enterprise Credit system (gsxt.gov.cn) and confirm factory address matches. Never pay 100% upfront regardless of how good the price looks.
How much do solar panels degrade per year in hot climates?
Quality Tier-1 panels: less than 0.45% per year (guaranteed by 25-year linear power warranty). In hot climates (panel temperatures regularly 65–75°C), technology choice matters significantly. HJT panels (temperature coefficient −0.24%/°C) outperform standard PERC panels (−0.38%/°C) by 4–6% annual energy yield at 70°C panel temperature. A 1MW system over 25 years in a hot climate: TOPCon vs PERC difference can exceed 150,000 kWh — worth tens of thousands of dollars at local electricity rates.
